Yule Logs Recipe

The Yule logs recipe is another great looking Christmas cookie! Filled with nutmeg, ginger, and rum, and topped with a sweet butter cream frosting these cookies will surely warm you up on those cold nights!


2 sticks (1 cup) salted butter, softened
3/4 cup granulated sugar
1/4 cup packed brown sugar
1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
1/2 teaspoon ground ginger
1 egg
1 tablespoon dark rum
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
3 cups all-purpose flour

Brown Butter Frosting
1 stick (1/2 cup) salted butter
5 cups sifted powdered sugar
1/4 cup milk
2 teaspoons vanilla extract

Colored sugar for sprinkling

Large bowl
Medium bowl
Plastic wrap
Medium saucepan
Cookie sheets

Step 1: In a large bowl, beat butter with an electric mixer set on medium-high for 30 seconds.
Step 2: Add granulated sugar, brown sugar, ground nutmeg, and ground ginger; beat until combined.
Step 3: Beat in egg, rum, and vanilla extract until combined.
Step 4: Beat in as much flour as you can. Stir in any remaining flour.
Step 5: Divide dough into six portions. Wrap dough in plastic wrap and chill for 30 minutes.
Step 6: Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.
Step 7: Lightly flour a working surface. Shape each dough portion into a 1/2-inch thick rope. Cut ropes into 3-inch logs. Place logs 2 inches apart on an ungreased cookie sheet.
Step 8: Bake for 12 minutes or until lightly browned. Immediately transfer cookies to a cooling surface.

Brown Butter Frosting
Step 1: In a medium saucepan, heat 1 stick (1/2 cup) of butter over low heat until melted. Continue heating butter until it turns a delicate brown. Remove from heat. Pour butter into medium bowl.
Step 2: Add 5 cups of sifted powdered sugar, 1/4 cup milk, and 2 teaspoons vanilla extract. Beat with an electric mixer on low speed until combined.
Step 3: Beat on medium speed, adding more milk (1-2 tablespoons), as necessary, to make frosting of spreading consistency.
Step 4: Spread frosting over each cooled cookie. Run a fork lengthwise along log so frosting resembles bark. Sprinkle each log with colored sugar.
